Personal Care for your Dog or Cat

Pet Care

Dogs and cats can’t always let us know when they are feeling unwell, are injured, or have a niggling flea. As pet owners, we assume responsibility for our pets’ health and wellbeing when we bring them into our homes.

Because dogs and cats age 5-8 times faster than humans, we need to be vigilant and proactive when it comes to pet care. The healthcare checklist recommended by WA vets includes regular check-ups, flea and tick control, worming, and behaviour training like puppy pre-school.

Does your pet get their once yearly check-up?

Most pets require annual vaccination boosters at a Perth vet clinic. This is a great opportunity to double up with your recommended yearly vet visit. Annual health check-ups allow you to ask any questions you have saved up, and get up-to-the-minute advice on nutrition and preventative healthcare.

What’s included in an annual check-up?

  • Vaccination boosters
  • Fitness and weight review
  • Dental, ear, tongue, eye, skin and coat check
  • Flea and tick control top-up
  • Advice on exercise and diet
  • Scan for signs of age-related disease

Do all pets require annual health checks?

Puppies and kittens will see the vet more frequently in their first year of life. Once pets reach maturity (1-2 years old) and are healthy, your vet will likely recommend yearly appointments. However, as pets age into seniority, or if they have ongoing health concerns, they may need more frequent check-ups.

Pet Care Essentials Recommended by WA Vets

Your pet’s routine must include a few essentials to keep them healthy: good diet, regular exercise, flea and tick control, worming treatments, vaccination boosters, and lots of love and attention.

Epsom Avenue Veterinary Clinic is a trusted Perth vet clinic with comprehensive healthcare solutions to keep your pets happy and healthy.

Intestinal worming

Intestinal worms can lead to poor growth and development in young pets, anaemia, and debilitating pain. All cats and dogs older than 6 months should be wormed every 3 months – and more frequently before 6 months – to prevent roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

Heartworm disease

Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, is an entirely preventable parasite that can cause serious health issues and even be fatal for pets. All good WA vets should recommend a heartworm combatant known as Proheart SR12, which can be administered during your pet’s annual health check.

Flea & tick control

At best, fleas and ticks are irritating. At worst, fleas can spread to humans and ticks can carry life-threatening diseases. Our Perth vet clinic stocks a wide range of leading flea and tick control products, and we can recommend the best application for your pet.

Pets, on average, age five to eight times faster than humans. By age two, most pets have already reached adulthood. At age four, many are entering middle age. By age seven, many dogs, particularly larger breeds, are entering their senior years.

Because pets age so rapidly, major health changes can occur in a short amount of time. The risk of cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, heart disease and other serious conditions all increase with age.

We recommend that your pets have a once yearly check up, this is usually done at the same time as annual vaccinations. However as your pets go into their senior years or if they have a specific health condition your vet may recommend more frequent checks. Health checks are also a great opportunity to ask us about nutrition, behaviour or any other issues.
